Biography
Ernestine Stoop was born in Utrecht and began studying harp, at the age of eleven, with Titia Tieman-van der Laars. She earned her solo diploma in 1980, studying with Edward Witsenburg at the Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam. She then studied for two years with the legendary harpist Pierre Jamet, the authority on the works of Claude Debussy; he worked with the composer himself on the pieces written for harp. Ernestine Stoop studied chamber music in Salzburg with the violinist Sandor Végh.After playing for 11 years with the Radio Filharmonic Orchestra, she is now dedicating herself fully to playing as a solist, chamber music (e.g. a duo with Eleonore Pameijer, flute) and teaching. She is a member of the Nieuw Ensemble, ASKO Ensemble and professor at the Royal College of Music in the Hague and at the Fontys High School of Music in Tilburg.
As a soloist she performed with such conductors as Hans Vonk, Ernest Bour, Jean-Jacques Kantorow, David Porcelijn, Ed Spanjaard, Rogier van Otterloo and James Last. She recorded classical as well as contemporary music. She worked closely with with well-known artists like Mathile Santing and Toots Tielemans and participated in theater- and film productions (e.g. with the Malinese Kora player Toumani Diabate) She has also enjoyed numerous and productive sessions with such composers as Mauricio Kagel, Isang Yun, Stockhausen, Elliott Carter, Louis Andriessen, Franco Donatoni, Theo Loevendie and Guus Janssen preparing their compositions for worlds first performances.
She initiated the 3rd and 5th European Harp Symposia in Amsterdam and gave the first performance of Guo Wenjing’s ‘Concerto for harp and lyric soprano’ in Amsterdam 2001. Recently a real Carillo-harp has been made for her. This is a unique 16th tone instrument designed by Juan Carrillo (Mexican composer) early 20th century.
At the moment she’s chairman of the Dutch Host Committee to organising the prestigeous 10th World Harp Congress 2008, which will take place in Amsterdam in the MuziekGebouw aan ‘t IJ.

Ernestine Stoop, geboren in Utrecht, begon haar harpstudie op elf-jarige leeftijd bij Titia Tieman-v.d. Laars. In 1980 behaalde zij haar solo-diploma bij Edward Witsenburg aan het Sweelinck Conservatorium te Amsterdam. Daarna studeerde zij bij de legendarische franse harpist Pierre Jamet in Parijs, de autoriteit op het gebied van de werken van Claude Debussy. Bij de eerste vertolking van de composities voor harp werkte hij nauw samen met de componist zelf. Ernestine Stoop studeerde verder kamermuziek bij Sandor Vegh in Salzburg.Gedurende elf jaar was zij als vaste harpiste verbonden aan het Radio Filharmonisch Orkest. Thans legt zij zich geheel toe op solistische werkzaamheden, het spelen van kamermuziek en lesgeven. Zij maakt deel uit van het Nieuw Ensemble, ASKO-ensemble en vormt een duo met de fluitiste Eleonore Pameijer.
Solistisch trad zij o.a. op met dirigenten als Hans Vonk, Ernest Bour, Ed Spanjaard, Ton Koopman, Jean-Jacques Kantorow, David Porcelijn, Rogier van Otterloo en James Last. Thans is zij verbonden als hoofdvakdocent aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag en de Hoge School voor de Kunsten in Tilburg. Uit een zeer gevarieerde discografie blijkt, dat haar interessen zowel naar het klassieke als eigentijdse repertoire uitgaan. Zo werkte zij nauw samen met beroemde popartiesten (o.a. Toots Tielemans en Mathilde Santing), toneel- en filmmusici, tv-produkties (o.a. met de Malinese Kora-speler Toumani Diabate) en kameropera's. Dit gaf haar de gelegenheid intensief samen te werken met componisten als Mauricio Kagel, Isang Yun, Elliott Carter, Theo Loevendie, Louis Andriessen, Guus Janssen, Pierre Boulez en Franco Donatoni.
In 1995 en 2001 was zij initiator van het zeer succesvolle 3e en 5e Europees Harp Symposium te Amsterdam.
In maart 1997 maakte zij met het Nieuw Ensemble een tournee door China; de eerste maal dat een hedendaags (niet-chinees) muziekensemble daar kon spelen. Tijdens de Robeco Zomerconcerten 2001 gaf zij de wereldpremière van “Concerto for harp and lyric soprano” van Guo Wenjing.
Onlangs heeft ze een uniek instrument laten maken: de zgn Carillo-harp, een 16e toons instrument. Een unicum, gemaakt naar de tekeningen van Juan Carrillo, Mexicaans componist begin 20e eeuw. Momenteel is ze artistiek leider van het te organiseren 10e World Harp Congress, wat plaats gaat vinden in Amsterdam - juli 2008 in MuziekGebouw aan ‘t IJ.
